From July 11-19, 2011, a group of ten young adults went to El Salvador and participated in the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart’s Project Fiat. The majority of the 9-day trip was spent in direct service to the community of Las Delicias, a poor village on the outskirts of the capital, San Salvador. Their service included ministry of presence to pre-school and school-aged children, building a new daycare, and accompanying the district nurse to tend to the sick. They also visited sites associated with Archbishop Oscar Romero’s life and ministry, learned about the culture and history of El Salvador, and engaged in theological reflection and group processing. It was a life changing experience!
The group met monthly from March to June to form a community with each other, learn about Archbishop Oscar Romero and the history of El Salvador, learn about Catholic Social Teaching, and work together to fundraise.
Upon their return from El Salvador, they met in July and August to process their experience and consider how to live out Romero’s mission in Camden and Philadelphia.
